Julie’s Artistic Window
Since 2023, the Link Wentworth Scholarships program has helped me to purchase equipment for my artistic endeavours. The funds I have received helped to buy art technology, including a camera and a pen to go with my iPad, which expanded the creative possibilities.
Because I am at home a fair bit, I take a lot of photos there – even from my window. There is a lovely jacaranda and wildlife like kookaburras and lorikeets in the trees I can see. I have photographed constellations and the full moon, which I use in creating different kinds of art.
I live with chronic pain and I find that focusing on creating art helps me to take my mind off that.
It works as a distraction from the pain and is therapeutic. It gives me a sense of meaning and achievement when I create something; you can feel a bit stuck with a disability. I am quite amazed by what comes out of me. When I sit and look at it, what I make has actually meant something and has expressed something from within me. That’s how I feel about art. It has helped me so much.
This year, I hope to apply again and look into doing some art therapy work. I would really like some more lessons in art – and to possibly write a mixed media memoir.
