Housing Justice for older people in NSW

Tenants Groups update

Across NSW, many older people live in unaffordable and insecure housing and may be at risk of homelessness.

The Lived Experience Action Group (LEAG) is a group of older people with experience of housing stress, calling on the NSW government to act.

LEAG advocates for real housing solutions and a specialist service for older people in NSW. We share our stories of homelessness and housing stress with decision makers, to bring about policy change.

Our group is supported by Housing for the Aged Action Group, a national member-based group advocating for the rights of older renters and people experiencing homelessness. We work with Ageing on the Edge, a coalition of 170 NSW organisations and people working to improve housing for older people in NSW.

About you

If you have ever struggled to pay rent, wondered where to go for help, had to move many times, received an eviction notice, relied on friends and family for a place to stay, lived in poor-quality housing, or otherwise experienced or been at risk of homelessness we would love to hear from you. LEAG is looking for new members aged over 50, from all backgrounds and life experiences.

What’s involved?

LEAG meets once every two months, online, for 1.5 hours during the day.

Members share their experiences and insights, and those of the communities they’re part of. They contribute to policy development, submissions to inquiries and consultations.

There may be opportunities to speak to members of Parliament or the media. Members receive a small financial reimbursement for their participation.

Contact: Claudia Burgner from HAAG on (03) 9654 7389 or email claudia. burgner@oldertenants.org.au
