How to prevent drain pain, with Susan Lucock
Do you upend random unwanted liquids down the nearest sink? Naughty you. Tsk tsk, give yourself a boot up the backside.
Do you know what a “choke” means in plumber speak?
Only water, detergent and soap goes down the sink to avoid COSTLY (to you – NOT the manager/owner of where you live) and environmentally damaging ‘chokes’ or blockage points in the wastewater network.
Up to $27 million is spent each year to manage and clean up 20,000 network blockages caused by people putting the wrong things down the drain and toilet – including oil, food scraps, chemicals and paint.
Many people don’t think twice about pouring kitchen waste down the sink, but the reality is fats, oils, greases and even milk are a significant threat to our wastewater network.
Fun Fact: Blacktown Council area had the most chokes attended by Sydney Water in 2024/5.
