My name is Daryl and I’ve had lots of jobs. I’ve worked in the Army, as a truck driver, on farms and as a gardener. I’ve also worked in sales and in construction and landscaping. I’ve done a variety of things to get by.
I don’t sit in the one place waiting for a job to happen, I chase the work. I’ve traveled a lot of Australia just to get work.
I lived in a campervan for three and a half years and those were some of the best times of my life. I really enjoyed that.
I’ve now got a job as a taxi driver. The reason I did this is that I’m new to Katoomba and I don’t know anybody really, I don’t know the place at all, so taxi driving is a way to learn all the streets, learn the area and to meet new people. To slide in and become a local. That’s the plan.
You can pick up information from the customers of what’s good and what’s not—go here, go there, try this restaurant, do this hike. Things like that. You learn all the back spots, I suppose. I’m pretty adventurous so I think it’s a good way to get in and see what Katoomba and the Mountains is all about.
I always put myself out there and extend the hand of friendship to people… Sometimes it gets bitten off, but sometimes people shake it and you get to know people. Katoomba has lots of friendly people—lots of art and activities, something happening all the time. I’m looking forward to doing more hikes and maybe getting a metal detector too, to do some treasure hunting.
